HISTORY

The Durazzo Pallavicini Park in Pegli, Genova was designed by the architect Michele Canzio, upon the request of the Marquis Ignazio Alessandro Pallavicini, hence the name. The constructions lasted from 1840 to 1846 during the romantic era. During this period freemasonry had a great effect on artists, these symbols can also be discovered in the park.

SCHEMA

Going through the historical garden is like being part of a theatrical tale. It’s an external and internal journey of discovering the beauty and the intricacies of nature. The journey begins, as always, with a prologue, followed by the background and three acts, all divided into four scenes concluding with the exodus. The designer used waterfalls, lakes, rare plants and scenic views to showcase a remarkable example of the Italian and European romantic era. When visiting you get to experience a cultural, botanical and philosophical wonder.

VISIT

You can visit the park by walking through the 2.5 km path, guiding you through the garden, taking you back to the neoclassical times in the nineteenth century. In 2017 the park was named Italy’s most beautiful garden. The garden holds a huge collection of species; of ancient trees, of rare camellias and aquatic flowers. The park also has a number of botanical attractions such as Araucaria bidwilli, Cedrus libani, Cinnamomum camphora, Jubaea chilensis, Notelaea excelsa, Firmiana simplex, Quercus suber, Podocarpus macrophyllus and exotic palm trees. The park features several structures including the Coffee House which has a triumphal arch shape, the grotto inspired by the Dantesque Inferno, leading to paradise, the Temple of Diana, the Flower House, the Obelisk, the Turkish Temple — to mention a few. These stunning structures make you feel like you are in another world, surrounded by beauty and breathtaking sights.

I recommend adding this marvelous work of art to your bucket list, created by the collaboration of man and nature. If you want to know more about the hidden meanings and masonic symbolism don’t hesitate to join the guided tour.
