The real-life story of Gustav, The Killer Croc

Gustav is both real and legend, he’s a large male Nile crocodile from Burundi. As rumors go, it is thought that he’s killed upwards of 300 people along the banks of Lake Tanganyika. With that said, the actual numbers though are difficult to verify. In his time, he has gathered a mythical status, not so much crocodile, but more water dragon. The locals in the region, fear the water and warn tourists to stay away. Gustav received his name from head pathologist Patrice Faye.

Patrice had been in the area, studying and researching Gustav since the mid to late 1990s. The majority of what is known about Gustav comes from her documentary “Capturing the Killer Croc” Which was released on PBS back in 2004. The entire plot of the documentary was the attempted capture and study of Gustav. It’s difficult to get an exact length or weight of him, due to him never being captured before. In 2002 however a handful of officials are quoted as saying, he easily could be more than 18 feet. and weigh just over a ton. Some locals claim, he could be even as long as 25 feet or more, but in order for that to be the case he would have to be around 100 years old, which, is not unheard of. Through careful observation though, it’s been identified that he appears to have a full set of teeth. A 100-year-old crocodile would be near toothless according to experts.
