Why Meditation is Beneficial

My name is Marsean Scott and I am currently a sophomore student at Texas State University and I have been meditating for a year now. During my early life I would always have trouble having clear thoughts. From my experience in high school everything was very chaotic and drama filled which increased my anxiety to the max. My mind would be all over the place and I would let my thoughts dictate how my mood and day will go overall. Often times i would find myself getting upset at people for no apparent reason and that would lead me to ignore them. Like some people, I often find myself overthinking things so deep that it’ll hit a nerve in me.

Throughout all the madness of high school and everything i decided to do something about the thoughts I was having. I wanted to be able to control my thoughts or even ignore the negative thoughts I would have and insert a positive one to take its place. That’s when I came across meditation and it changed my life for the better. For those who don’t know , to meditate is to engage contemplation or reflection. There’s a lot of things that can distract us from being in the present moment in life and meditation helps with that. It allows you to become present with your thoughts and emotions that you’re having and calms you to a point where you’re completely mellow.

How Do I Meditate ?

1. Sit or lie comfortably

2. Close your eyes.

3. Make no effort to control the breath; simply breathe naturally.

4. Focus your attention on the breath and on how the body moves with each inhalation and exhalation. Notice the movement of your body as you breathe. Observe your chest, shoulders, rib cage, and belly. Simply focus your attention on your breath without controlling its pace or intensity. If your mind wanders, return your focus back to your breath.

Am I Doing It Right ?

The main question that would always go through my head would be am I meditating correctly. The answer to that question would be to just not worry about right or wrong. If you’re focusing on your breath everything else will take its course. Everybody will have different experiences regarding meditation so don’t get fixated on if you’re doing it right.
