Although this herb is quite easy-to-grow and spreads quickly it sometimes burns or gets stressed out due to unfavorable conditions.

WHEN AND WHERE TO PLANT MINT

Growing mint is easy but you need to wait!!! Yeah, you need to wait if you live in a cold area until the last frost passes because mint fancies to be grown in temperatures ranging from 55 to 70°F (13–21ºC).

You also need to consider that you are planting a fragrant weed that spreads quickly and you need enough space for it to spread also its roots spread quickly deep and wide.

So, keep these factors in your mind before planting them.

CARE GUIDE/TIPS FOR MINT PLANT

While you are growing spearmint or peppermint inside or outdoor following care tips must be kept in mind.

1. LIGHT

Mint plant produces the best flavor and smell if grown in partial shade and partial light though may survive comfortably in full sun conditions but you then have to water it on regular basis. If you are living somewhere where the sun scorches harshly during late-day hours you might consider providing partial shade to the mint plant. If you are growing mint somewhere indoors the taste and smell may not be of that level.

2. SOIL

Growing mint plant in dry basic soil doesn’t seem to be a good idea. Mint plant thrives comfortably in acidic, well-drained, and moist soil. Mint naturally likes to be watered yet a waterlogged soil may cause its roots to be rot or fungus may attack its soil.

3. WATER

Watering mint plant frequently is quite essential. Mint plant nourishes nicely in moist conditions but keeping the soil soggy may cause root rot. It is best to water mint regularly in hot countries like the sub-continent. It is best to water plants in the morning to help plant during hot day hours.

4. FERTILIZER

Well according to my experience I wouldn’t suggest an over-fertilizing mint plant. Fertilizing mint plant twice or thrice a year would be enough. Add urea or natural compost while growing in pots which would keep the leaves healthy also spraying with Epsom salt (1 tablespoon in 4 liters) once a month is recommendable.

5. PRUNING

Mint plant serves its purpose well. Yes, I’m talking about harvesting. Grow mint and prune/use it often to make it bushier, healthier, and strong. It often seems like the mint plant competes with you the more you cut it the stronger it becomes!!!

6. PEST/DISEASES

Mint plant is not affected by pests. However weak or stressed plants may get attacked by whiteflies, mealy bugs, etc. in that case usual pesticides are recommended.

“In a nutshell, growing mint is easy and by following simple care tips it may spread all over your garden.”
