It’s a fundamental concept that we need to be very aware of and consciously deal with every day. It’s possibly akin to a form of anti-intellectualism, a fear of deep and meaningful thinking about the value and purpose of our work perhaps.

The idea you’ve expressed highlights the dangerous comfort zone that software teams can gravitate towards in the face of constant uncertainty and upheaval (hyper-turbulence). It’s easier for software developers to just start building stuff and feel busy/useful rather than examine if what they’re being asked to do will deliver a meaningful outcome.

I think the trick then is to conduct our critical thinking in a constructive manner and focus on finding a path to a meaningful outcome that everyone believes in.
