2020 Hindsight — A Poem

You say import the goods
but export the people
Let the child live
but keep the guns legal
just in case we don’t like them

Ignorance is bliss
and blissful it must be
to throw the bomb and watch it on TV
and mute the sound so the blast won’t
wake them

Bottle the brandy, the whiskey, the poison
Leave for New Jersey and come back an orange
Machine of the masses, an outlaw in diamonds
and monogrammed cufflinks
only to fool them

But you don’t fool me,
so I’ll keep on talking
until you hear me call bullshit
out on your front lawn
Lies always surface no matter how long
you hide them

We are the “great” you have never been
nor ever will be
Your songs will remain unsung
Your comeuppance is upon you
so acknowledge your duty to step aside
and abide them
