I’m editing a book for a professor in Florida that asserts that, since the oligarchy has already owned the federal government, it’s beyond reasonable belief that the status quo can be changed by anything short of a new Constitutional Convention based on Article V. I pour my editorial and intellectual powers into the project even though I live in a country (the also-divided Philippines) where a constitutional rewrite is proposed. A proposal I strongly oppose. Enigma. Quandary. Dilemma. As with the present US Constitution, a reasoned social contract can only arise from informed debate. The source of my cognitive dissonance is the question of whether debate on a meaningful scale is even possible in today’s climate of radical (& irrational) division.
