Something like rising sea level is not a liberal vs. conservative issue in the first place…the measurement devices involved have no politics. Nor is framing actual scientific prognosis as “liberal fantasy worries” posed to “scare people into fixing things” a particularly useful paradigm. Certainly, ways & means of mitigating deaths have been very effective, but: 1) they are based on the very prognostications you seem to otherwise discount & 2) I have personally witnessed how some — ironically, mostly conservative — people will refuse evacuation & other disaster mitigations out of the very illogic you put forth here. When you add to that the increasing number of poor, who often lack the ability to evacuate and/or anywhere to go, I think it’s plain that there is a practical limit to the mitigation of disaster fatalities. Add to that the number of government officials who may subscribe to the ideas you propose & it’s clear what I mean when I call your piece “unhelpful.”
