A lot has been written on the subject of baby weaning, but few reference a conclusive study utilizing Early Flavor Learning in children that demonstrated a simple and effective method for transitioning children to solid foods, while also getting them to like and prefer the flavor of vegetables.

In the study 40 moms with infants were divided into two groups. The first group moms followed a gradual, step-by-step guide to weaning with veggies over 35 days. In the first 12 days, moms mixed baby’s usual milk with a little vegetable puree and then allowed baby to try it once per…

The ubiquitous, non-adventurous toddler.

When your pregnant, there’s more to nutrition than just nutrients — even before birth, your baby is learning to love and prefer the flavors of the things you eat. Research has proven that fetuses experience the flavors of mom’s diet. And, in fact, these flavor experiences can shape the preferences of babies during weaning and beyond. Yes, you read that right:

You have the power to shape your baby’s palate while pregnant.

In one study, conducted by Julie Mennella and colleagues, moms drank carrot juice for three consecutive weeks during their third trimester, while a second group was told to…

Exposure to a variety of vegetable flavors at an early age has been confirmed as an effective method for training young palates to prefer the flavors of a healthy diet later in life. While all children are born with a predisposition for sweets and an aversion to bitter tasting vegetables, these ingrained preferences can be re-shaped through early flavor learning before the age of two.

Unfortunately, as reported in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, while the baby food aisle is filled with a dizzying array of wholesome-looking squeezy pouches, baby foods available on today’s US market fail to help…

While every child and every child’s palate is unique, there are two things that virtually all kids have in common: they love sweets and they hate vegetables. Evolution, while working to steer us clear of bitter-tasting, poisonous plants and to prefer the sweet taste of energy-loaded foods, has unfortunately dealt our children a natural preference for poor nutrition in today’s world.

But there’s good news. Multiple scientific studies have revealed a series of “flavor learning windows” during which it is much easier to shape a child’s Flavor Intelligence. This period of opportunity starts in utero at 4 months gestation and…

Admit it. Happening upon a well-designed mobile website is a joyful experience. Your fingers swipe, tap and skip with the glee of a four-year-old. Your eyes relax, enjoying text that is refreshingly comfortable in size and contrast. Your brain hums along as the site’s images guide your experience, like a children’s picture book, using visuals to fill in the blanks left by the artfully crafted copy. Yes, a kick-ass mobile site is a joy to behold, not to mention the fact that it’s remarkably effective at selling products and services, and furthering brand loyalty.

So why (if they feel so…

As a fellow marketer, if the brand you are currently involved with is the category leader, congratulations. Feel free to skip this article and continue dominating as per usual. However, if the brand you currently involved with is what we refer to as a “challenger brand,” you may find the following tactic to be quite interesting — though most of you would never consider using it.

For challenger brands, especially start-ups, building awareness is key. The faster you get your name into the heads of more potential customers the higher your potential for quick growth. Which brings me to a…

Over the course of the summer, my 10-year-old daughter, Sophia, occasionally sets up a lemonade stand in front of our house. She often rallies a friend (or if that fails, her brother) to work with her, usually offering them a fixed amount of her future earnings. But when it comes to the marketing of her business, i.e. product display, posters, pricing, and promotions, Sophia rules her lemonade stand with an iron fist, often declaring, “this is not a family business, this is my lemonade stand.”

While my suggestions about pricing and advertising generally fall on deaf ears, I am always…

The belief that our kids will die at a younger age than we will is not new. It has been trumpeted by Michelle Obama in recent years as a part of her initiative to fight childhood obesity as well as many other public health advocates.

It stems from a research paper compiled by an expert panel of health and medical advisors as well as mathematicians who specialize in extrapolation. Their combined thinking was clear in its message:

“If the prevalence of obesity continues to rise, especially at younger ages, the negative effect on health and longevity in the coming decades…
