I had been thinking about this for a long time.
Feeling frustrated. Putting up with her limitations.
While functional, she was old. She didn’t have “the new car smell”.
Her curves and features had lost their charm. Her little noises, old hat.
It was time to trade her in. For something younger, prettier.
Something with more oomph.
I thought long and hard, trying to decide what to do.
Finally, my mind was made up.
I pressed Submit.
The deed was done.
ETA two weeks? So long.
The days passed slowly.
Finally, an email alert. The day had come.
The doorbell rang. There was UPS with my new toy.
I could not wait to unwrap her.
The packaging engineers did an amazing job. An outer box. Then a fancy inner box. Lots of inserts and compartments to hide her accessories.
Considering their wonderful packaging will be in my dustbin tomorrow, my admiration is fleeting. But noted.
She is dressed in red. My favorite color.
I sit her on the desktop, plug her in, and press the power button.
There it is, the familiar bong.
The Apple logo appears on the screen.
My new iMac 24-inch has arrived.
Smaller than the 27-inch monster that occupied my desk for 13 years, faithfully executing my commands.
She is more elegant, slimmer, and lighter. And more powerful.
She asks me questions.
Yes, I speak English. Yes, I want to import data from Old Faithful.
Yes, I have a wireless mouse and keyboard.
So many questions. Some unnecessary, nonsensical legal mumbo jumbo to agree to.
And a while later, I sit in admiration, in front of my 2024 high-resolution iMac with M3 Apple silicon power.
Ready to write my first story on this marvelous piece of engineering.
