You Can Be Arrested For What?

I just finished attending a technology conference where I had my eyes opened to a topic I knew very little about.

Did you know that if you take a nude picture of yourself to text and its on your phone, you could be arrested for possession of porn?

Did you know if you sent the same picture to your friends you could be arrested for distributing porn?

I had no idea about either of these things. I knew sexting involved sending sexually suggestive written materials via the cell phone but I had not fully realized that people also sent nude photos. So this was a shock.

I did a bit of research and children as young as 13 are involved in exchanging sexual messages. Did you know that around 25% of the 14 to 17 age group have sent nude photos? Many of them sent the photos to someone whom they’ve never met but know from the internet?

What is it in our society that makes it socially accepted to send and receive this type of material especially with such a young crowd. No I’m not a prude but I wonder what it does to the psyche of our youth if this is acceptable.

The human brain is not fully developed until the age of about 25. A teenager, although appearing to be mature, still has some growth to do before they have all the sensibilities of an adult.

In addition, what is posted on the internet stays on the internet, in peoples phones, in hoards of stored data. Furthermore, many of these sexually explicit messages are shared with others before being reshared. I don’t think these young ones are aware of the implications, should a shared picture ends up on a pedophiles computer.

We are changing from a society that had personal boundaries to one where we share everything. I do not see this as a good change. I hope teenagers wake up to the fact their pictures can go through multiple hands and be seen for more than just their friends.
