On Being the First Openly Gay GOP Platform Committee Member

Your post motivated me to have a look at the 2016 Republican Platform for myself:
“[T]he cornerstone of the family is natural marriage, the union of one man and one woman …The data and the facts lead to an inescapable conclusion: Every child deserves a married mom and dad …Our laws and our government’s regulations should recognize marriage as the union of one man and one woman …For that reason, as explained elsewhere in this platform, we do not accept the Supreme Court’s redefinition of marriage and we urge its reversal.” (Republican Platform 2016, pages 31–32)
As someone deeply committed to twenty-four years of what your committee calls my “unnatural marriage,” I can’t say I share your optimism for your party’s future. “Fighting for change within” can sound like a noble goal — but when we choose to support those who actively oppress us, there is a point at which we are no longer catalysts, but merely collaborators.
