A few weeks ago, I went down to Washington to march alongside hundreds of thousands in a human river of American pride and protest. Then I hopped a plane to Cuba to go off the grid and learn about a place only recently open to American tourists.
A few years ago, shortly after moving to a small city in the north of Vietnam, I became painfully lonely, often afraid, and perpetually overwhelmed.

But on Sunday, it is my niece’s birthday in Pennyslvania, and more than I don’t want to leave the bubble, I want to show up for her.
