Artifact 2: Free Write About Design, May 1st

Freewrite about “design”

  1. How do you define “design”?

I define design as a piece of art and the way it is presented; a creation of some sort that someone put together. It can be for a building, a piece of clothing, a sign, a billboard, a painting, a sculpture. The options can go on and on.

2. In your own words, describe what “good” design is/involves.

“Good” design involves a design that is presented well and has an effect on its viewers.

3. What does design have to do with English 101 (assignments, concepts, essays), writing, communication, etc.?

Design and English 101 go hand in hand because the design of our essay is important for how it is portrayed and then interpreted. We want our readers to be able to understand our point in writing our essays and have them take away from it what we think they should.

In this free write activity, we had to define “design” in our own words, describe what “good” design is/involves, and what design has to do with English 101. I defined design as a piece of art and the way it is presented; a creation of some sort that someone put together. It can be for a building, a piece of clothing, a sign, a billboard, a painting, a sculpture. The options can go on and on. I said “good” design involves a design that is presented well and has an effect on its viewers. For what is has to do with English 101, I said we want our readers to be able to understand our point in writing our essays and have them take away from it what we think they should. This activity helped me to realize that in English 101, the design of our essay is important for how it is portrayed and then interpreted. Also, design plays into how we put together our portfolios. The way our portfolios are designed speaks volumes to how we organize our work and how we can present our own work. I have used this concept of design throughout this quarter in English 101 in my writing overall and how I structure it.
