Prospective Analysis
The rhetorical strategies I can adapt in other contexts would be ethos, pathos, and logos. I think I can apply ethos to any future papers or essays I write of course, but also just in everyday life and when interacting with others. I want to be able to use what I have learned in English 101 when it comes to ethos and present myself in an ethical and open-minded way. The attitude and characteristics of the way I write and speak will show what kind of person I am as a writer and just an all-around person. When meeting someone for the first time, their ethos is usually one of the first things about them that is noticed. That being said, knowing how my ethos comes across is very important because then people will have enough to start to understand who I am and where I come from. Pathos is a less obvious strategy that can be applied to contexts outside of an academic setting. However, writing pieces aside, anything that I create and present should provoke some kind of emotion. It does not have to be strict emotion like happy or sad, but anything like deep thinking or the desire to learn more about that specific piece or idea would count as well. In interaction with others, things that are said and talked about can also awaken thought or emotion which would support the idea that pathos can be used outside of the university and in everyday life. Logos is the last strategy I will talk about that can be repurposed in other contexts. In order to participate in society, what I say, do, and/or write needs to have a logic behind it. Otherwise, it is hard to make sense of an argument when it does not have any logic behind it. Also, ethos is affected by logos. If I do not present myself with any logos, then my ethos will suffer because I do not have anything to back up my credibility. Overall, these strategies can be useful outside of an academic setting, such as at an interview for a job, interacting with others, whether it be peers or people I work with. These strategies are important in writing, but also in everyday life if I am looking to be a more meaningful and helpful part of whatever community I partake in.
