The Open Group Architecture Framework (TOGAF) is one of the most widely accepted methods for developing enterprise architecture. It is a generic framework however it provides a comprehensive set of methods, principles and supporting tools.

When I decided to do the TOGAF certification, I was completely lost and didnt know where to begin. The official documentation published on The Open Group seemed like the right place to start. But to read through the standard and remembering the different aspects of it, was a challenge. So I started creating mindmaps for different aspects of the documentation.

Here is the first one in the series of mindmaps. The key concepts covered here are — What is an enterprise, who are the stakeholders, what is role of an enterprise architecture, what is enterprise architecture and what are the different kinds of architecture.

Since the purpose of these mindmaps is to learn the concepts and get familiar with TOGAF terminology, I have used the exact same terminology as specified in the standard.

Important points to remember —

  • Enterprise can be a single institute or a group but has to have common goal(s)
  • Stakeholders are key people who can affect or be affected by the business
  • An architect plays an important role in identifying stakeholders, developing architectural views, showing trade-offs thus translating the business strategy into business change and technical deliveries.
  • Kinds of architecture — Business, data, application and technology architecture
  • Enterprise architecture provides strategic context and right balance between business transformation and continuous operational efficiency
