Of Piddling Ailments

A grandmother of two, busy with her daily chores is amused when asked if she has been tested for glaucoma. The only access to public healthcare service her village has is an Aanganwadi in the neighboring village . She has heard someone mention the Aanganwadi’s existence, she shares. On the basis of available data, it is estimated that there are approximately 11.2 million persons aged 40 years and older with glaucoma in India. Primary open angle glaucoma is estimated to affect 6.48 million persons. The estimated number with primary angle-closure glaucoma is 2.54 million. Those with any form of primary angle-closure disease could comprise 27.6 million persons. Most of those with disease are undetected and there exist major challenges in detecting and treating those with disease.” (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20711029)

In a place where institutional delivery is a modern concept, you do not expect people to care much about ailments like glaucoma or even the old for that matter.
