Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2023)— a short review
The adventure of Ant-Man and his family in a quantum civilization.
The review contains spoilers!
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2023) is the opening movie of Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) Phase 5. Quantum physics, a father loses his time and an overzealous villain— a combination of an intriguing science fiction movie.
The movie uses a sci-fi genre to narrate a story about family love and care, and it is a theme frequently used in storytelling. To recap, Scott Lang and his family were sucked into the Quantum Realm and thus began their journey to find their way home. They met an old friend, involved in helping an uprising and defeating the tyrant, Kang, to return home. A story about an adventure, which is overly familiar for moviegoers if we subtract the superhero trope.
Unlike the portrayal in comics and animations, M.O.D.O.K. in this movie wasn’t terrifying; he was playing the funny guy. His entire personality was much weaker than when he was Yellowjacket in Ant-Man (2015). The fact that he’s seeking a redemption arc doesn’t elevate his character, in my opinion.
This version of Kang is a weaker iteration than Kang and his variant in the Loki TV series. Arrogant yet vulnerable. Imagine being an emperor-like figure and being stomped by thousands of evolved giant ants. He regained his consciousness and energy, trying to defeat the protagonists. Yet in the end, he was sucked into a vortex and disappeared (forever)—a tragic ending.
Optimistically, it is like a starter of a meal to get to know MCU Phase 5 and introduce the Multiverse Sage.
