Faith, Trust, And Pixie Dust
Disney. Walt Disney, to be exact. There isn’t much more to say about one of the most successful companies in the world. This year, Walt Disney Studios received eight Oscar nominations and the winners will be revealed at the Academy Awards on Sunday, February 26th, 2017. Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Zootopia and Moana were nominated for Best Animated Feature. One thing that surprised me about the nominations for Best Animated Feature was Finding Dory did not receive a nomination. HOW COULD THEY. Excuse me, this is Dory we are talking about. Moving on, LucasFilm’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story got the nod for both Visual Effects and Sound Mixing. Disney’s The Jungle Book and Marvel’s Doctor Strange were also nominated for Visual Effects. Pixar’s animated short, Piper, is on the list for best animated short, as well. Most importantly, and my favorite nomination (even though I haven’t seen the movie yet), is Moana’s song “How Far I’ll Go” was nominated for Best Song. THIS SONG IS AMAZING, so please go listen.
As I was saying about Moana, Disney did an absolutely amazing job with this movie and the animation. It is one of the most culturally authentic Disney movies ever, with the creators traveling to Polynesia to gain insight. A group called the Oceanic Trust helped shape the film by including the small details that would make this movie shine. The main cast have roots in the Pacific Islands, which definitely helped them shape their performances to fit with what they knew of Pacific culture. This movie allowed little girls from all over the islands to relate to their own princess, since this is one of the first of Polynesian descent. They were able to express themselves and Moana has become a huge hit. For the Academy Awards, it is up against Kubo And The Two Strings, My Life As A Zucchini, The Red Turtle, and Zootopia. First off, what even is My Life As A Zucchini? A talking zucchini? As I’m typing this, I’m trying not to laugh, but who comes up with this stuff? In all honestly, Moana’s only competition is Zootopia, considering it is another Disney animated film. I have faith that Moana will be able to pull out the win, but I guess we’ll have to tune in and see. All we need is a little faith, trust, and pixie dust!
