“Who Am I?”

This pivotal question that has anchored the search of fulfillment of mankind has continued to circle around for eons. In the time of revelation, Jesus understood his role of embodying that of God as the meaning of his existence. The same goes for the Prophet Mohammed — who received his revelation in the midst of self-inquiry and isolation. Siddhartha Gautama (frequently known as Buddha) ventured on a journey away from the illusions of the outer world into this self-questioning. What is it about identities that serve as such a huge importance for humanity?

The onset of my “spiritual awakening” as many would call it was prompted upon this very question. Many of us may find ourselves in situations where we have given our power away or lost the meaning of our purpose on this earth. Some of us may aimlessly walk around, believing that we have no true purpose. However, each step that we take, each experience we have, our jobs, our passions, our likes/dislikes inevitably brings us back to this question; “who am I?”

In the midst of my own shadow work — assessing my experiences as an adult and analyzing the correlation with patterns I’d learned and interpreted as a young child — I quietly came to the realization that the identities we take on are purely subjective. Very often do we react or behave in a…
