“You begin saving the world by saving one man at a time; all else is grandiose romanticism or politics”.-Charles Bukowski

I always find it odd to understand different notions of subjects that Bukowski has written but one thing that astounds me is the unique perspective that he had. It seems like he had the giant crystal ball beside his typewriter that he already knew what will happen in the future.

Charles Bukowski doesn’t need grandiose poetry to explain reality. He is one of the writers that talks about what he wants to express and spitting facts giving you the chills of sad reality about life.

We are born into this sorrowful deadliness

We are born into a government 60 years in debt

That soon will be unable to even pay the interest on that debt

And the banks will burn

Money will be useless

There will be open and unpunished murder in the streets

It will be guns and roving mobs

Do you know what’s funny? It’s happening now. I find it fascinating and sad at the same time because how can we provide solutions to this kind of catastrophe? How do we solve this kind of crisis without hurting ourselves?

People Aren’t good by Charles Bukowski is one of those examples of telling people ‘good to swallow drugs’ on different levels.

our educational system tells us
that we can all be
big-ass winners.

it hasn’t told us
about the gutters
or the suicides.

Truth hurts. Yes. But admit it or not Bukowski really knows what’s the deal. You’ll never know the danger of that door without opening it. How many percentages does the educational system care about mental health issues?

Toxic families form pressure on their children and mold them to make their own products, for their own benefit. I don’t know what to say but it is just one of the factors. There’s a lot of factor in committing suicide: drugs and depression are one of them.

Do you know what’s sad? Some of them don’t know where to go or even their peers or family don’t know what they're battling with. It is sad to see those precious gems struggling with this kind of battle. I mean we could do better as humans at least.

there is a loneliness in this world so great
that you can see it in the slow movement of
the hands of a clock.

people so tired
mutilated
either by love or no love.

people just are not good to each other
one on one.

the rich are not good to the rich
the poor are not good to the poor.

we are afraid.

Yes, we are. We’re all human after all. We are afraid. We either give up and regret or work until giving up. I wish we can have a life tracker to remind us where or when to stop. In that way, we can stop trying. Then that tracker will ring to warn us that we are pushing ourselves to our limits in that way we can finally avoid the mistakes we had to encounter. Capitalism after all has its own pros and cons but fuck it, we suffer too much.

too much
too little

too fat
too thin
or nobody

more haters than lovers.

people are not good to each other.
perhaps if they were
our deaths would not be so sad.

Social media addiction is really a huge issue. Admit it. We’re all guilty of using social media too much that it takes a toll on our lives. We spend hours and hours waiting for others to console and accept us to receive those validations from others. Perhaps, we have this standard of beauty on Instagram, and virality on Facebook is easy to achieve as long as you have the personality that everyone will love. This toxicity, for example, spreading misinformation and clashing people to people on Facebook giving us that vibes on a pressure cooker where if we’re going to explode we become noisier; a nuisance.

meanwhile I look at young girls
stems
flowers of chance.

there must be a way.

surely there must be a way we have not yet
thought of.

who put this brain inside of me?

it cries
it demands
it says that there is a chance.

it will not say
“no.”

At the end of the day, we’re all writers in our story as Bukowski is a writer of his own but something appealing in this poem that reminds me that he is a full pessimist and average optimist at the same time. It doesn’t make sense right? How can this person be so hopeful at the same time depressing? Maybe he’s just also finding that puzzle to be able to find that answer. Though he is dead, no one will ever know when.

On this take, Charles Bukowski's poems remind me of my blunt friends in a party that can easily spot fake friends. Only a legend can do that. His strong opinion of the world made me understand the bitterness and beauty in life. I have to admit that after long hours of reading and listening to his poem I feel it quite depressing to listen but at the same time, you’ll feel the comfort alone because you’ll finally understand what he’s trying to convey. It’s hard to accept it but “it is what it is” but life itself is beautiful…you have to remember that.

To recap why Charles Bukowski is a Legend….

BECAUSE HE IS A “LEGEND’’.He really defines that man that ages like a fine wine with the wisdom that he got. People will hate people but not this man.
