An Ode to Facebook Ads

By Maggie Hellwig

I see, cramped in the margins,

an ad for cosplay wigs.

Do you, Facebook,

think me a clown?

Maybe you interpreted my feminist rants

as a desire to be Sailor Moon,

or seek to lend physical means

of expression?

Yesterday I spotted another lingerie tagline,

to remind me

no trendy websites sell my size.

Do you tell me, Facebook,

That I am fat?

Sometimes I let loose

my insecurities,

but you take it as an invitation

for consumer manipulation.

Oh, reliable Facebook,

plug me an algorithm for capitalistic sympathy.

Please suggest a site that does not care

for trends,

for mass media,

for rape culture.

I grow tired of your Old World advances.
