Finding balance in a new life

Danny here:

Allison and I are visiting all 50 states. It’s our dream to travel the world and experience the different cultures through our senses. Eating, listening, feeling, seeing the communities that make up the cities and towns.

We are beginning in America. More specifically, California.

We began our journey 2 weeks ago, June 1st.

We did our best to prepare for our tour but what we experience on the road is nothing we can prepare for. I mean, we have our instruments (my guitar and her camera and computer) and other odds and ends. However, there’s more to our new way of life than the possesions we’ve kept.

Here’s a list of things we didn’t prepare for:

  1. Being stereotypically treated — some think we’re street people and look at us in a sad way. A dissapointed or disgusted way. Some think we’re travelers and treat us in a hospitable way (showering us with fruits, breads and lots of encouragement).

  1. Where to rest if we don’t have a place to sleep — We purchased a bivy sack (the smallest tent you could possible get), sleeping bags and prepared to “rough it”. The catch is, we didn’t prepare to feel like “street people” or bums. We’ve slept on patios, balconies, church grounds and parks, free of charge I might add.

  1. How fast to travel from place to place — Part of our tour is to serve the communities we stay in and build relationships as well. It takes time to build relationships. One thing we didn’t think of is “how long do we stay at in a town?” Well, after 2 weeks of constant travel Allison and I decided to head back to Monterey. We are staying for 3 weeks and finding different open mics (music, video, photography, anything really) and finding people who express themselves through art like we do. Then build meaningful relationships that will hopefully last the rest of our lives. Also, we are going to volunteer our time and energy to the city of Monterey. We are going to visit the chamber of commerce and see what organizations are active in the city and see if any catch our attention.

We have 1 month till we have to be in San Diego for Allison’s sister, Rebecca’s, wedding.

We want to thank everyone who has helped us up to this point. We are so appreciative of the gestures of kindness and brotherhood.

We believe life should be lived by following our passions and efforts. We believe it takes a community to take care of each other.
