Lao Tzu is a G

“When I let go of what I am, I become what I might be.”

Here we have a quote from Lao Tzu, an ancient Chinese philosopher, writer, religious leader, and total gangster.

As a young writer just getting his feet wet in Ad Land, this sentiment sits snug in my back pocket. What a comforting thought — that brilliance can flash from fresh minds, unscathed by client asks and industry standards.

At a time in my career when it’s important to learn the ins and outs of the branding industry, it’s doubly important to write with the mind that got me to this desk in the first place. Whenever I catch myself using one too many buzzwords in a sentence, I picture Lao Tzu shaking his damn head in disappointment.

But this quote transcends branding. Rather, it’s a reminder to be present, to never feel entitled, and to briskly oust unnecessary stress from your life — just as Lao Tzu does dirt from his shoulder.
