Nice article, Joel. Definitely an interesting and upcoming subject. I love all of the ethical questions that arise from Anticipatory Design! The thing I find most interesting about this subject is when devices/ technology anticipate our needs incorrectly. A lot of design fiction focuses on the seamlessness of anticipatory design, but as we know from using technology already, this seamlessness is an ideal that doesn’t exist. In fact, I find the more technology TRIES to anticipate and understand us the more distracting it becomes when it gets it wrong. Example: ads on Facebook are filtered very closely to data based on our location/ gender/age /likes, but it takes weeks for it know that you’re in a different location. I was getting ads in Indonesian for 2 weeks after moving from Bali to Madrid. I would be interested to see Anticipatory Design for a digital nomad, whose routine is slim to none. Or imagine the image you painted when you’re waking up in someone else’s house after a one night stand. Food for thought.
