Magpie Mumas round up of SS19 New York fashion Week ‘ones to watch’.

With the glow of summer still on our faces and festival season pumping though our veins its hard to believe that the mayhem of Fashion Week is upon us, ready to propel us into the colours and trends for SS19.
New York Fashion week kicks off the SS19 shows, delving us into the world of fashion and beauty for the new season. As always there will be some big names, the return of Rodarte and Proenza Schouler are back in town.
However, what really gets me hot under the collar is the hidden gem, the rising star of the catwalk season, below is a snap shot of some of the talent showcasing at NYFW that is getting me all excited!
Lyz Olko
New York based designer, growing up in New Jersey she was primarily interested in punk, skateboarding, and the zine culture. Olk’s designs are heavily influenced by music and films, referencing lyrics, graphics, and style in her collection. Her NYFW collection has sustainability at the core, i cant wait to see it.

Wei Lin and Mijia Zhang of PH5
This design twosome are a fashion and business powerhouse, with experience at Deloitte, Nike, and Ralph Lauren between them. You’ve most likely already seen their cool knits on stars like Emma Roberts, Chriselle Lim, and Rita Ora. Established in New York in 2014, PH5 is an advanced contemporary women’s knitwear brand. Designer Mijia has a particular interest in innovative, high tech textiles and technical developments which is displayed in the collection marrying whimsical designs with architectural dimensions of knitting techniques.

Alice McCall
Although she is not strictly a new comer to the fashion week circuit this is her NYFW debut. Boho dresses, lacy lingerie tops and 1970s-style denim rompers are just some of the Australian designer’s calling cards, a mix of breezy femininity and mid-century retro appeal. Watch out this season or her signature vintage prints and embroideries which will be worked into modern, elegant silhouettes.

Lou Dallas
Raffaella Hanleys garments are made mostly from deadstock or recycled textiles, which are then imparted with handmade details like loomed knitting and embroidery. Her work veers toward the funky-cool and aggressively lurid, think a hipster Miss Havisham remaking yesterday’s trash into today’s treasures.

And of Distraction
Danita Short’s vision for ‘And of Distraction was to create: “the energy of the late ’70s meets motorcycles and work wear.” A lot of the collection is styled by her upbringing in Alberta, Canada where her passions for music, motorcycles and the open road flourished and clearly runs throughout her line. AW18 saw wide-wale corduroy and twill canvas, as did matte rubber outerwear and striped men’s wear shirting, SS19 is set to be as exciting.
SS19 is shaping up to be an exciting season of shows, watch out for my next blog post that will give you an insight into the exciting new talent you can expect to see at London Fashion Week.
