EXPLORING DESIGN COMPOSITIONS
Some of my understanding’s of design compositions using examples :
Let me tell you about design compositions, Design compositions is nothing but how you arrange and place design elements on a page. The spaces between the design, the arrangement, and the ways in which the designs interact or crossover with other elements. Arranging of different shapes in a different way. so i tried to explore about these , i have drawn many compositions using black pen and paper.
Before exploring design compositions and some examples , let me share you about Gestalt principles of design.
GESTALT PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN
Gestalt Principles are laws of human perception that describe how humans group similar elements, recognize patterns and simplify complex images when we perceive objects. Designers use the principles to organize content on websites and other interfaces so it is aesthetically pleasing and easy to understand.
Seven Gestalt principles that directly apply to modern design This isn’t an list of design principles, but you’ll quickly begin to notice that there’s an overlap between many of the principles and that they all work together fluidly.
- CLOSURE
The principle of closure states that when we look at a complex arrangement of visual elements, we tend to look for a single, recognizable pattern.
In other words, when you see an image that has missing parts, your brain will fill in the blanks and make a complete image so you can still recognize the pattern.
2. PROXIMITY
The principle of proximity states that things that are close together appear to be more related than things that are spaced farther apart.
Proximity is so powerful that it overrides similarity of color, shape, and other factors that might differentiate a group of objects
3. SIMILARITY
The principle of similarity states that when things appear to be similar to each other, we group them together. And we also tend to think they have the same function.
4. FIGURE GROUND
The figure-ground principle states that people instinctively perceive objects as either being in the foreground or the background. They either stand out prominently in the front (the figure) or recede into the back (the ground).
5. CONTINUITY
The principle of continuity states that elements that are arranged on a line or curve are perceived to be more related than elements not on the line or curve.
6. COMMON REGION
The principle of common region is highly related to proximity. It states that when objects are located within the same closed region, we perceive them as being grouped together.
Adding borders or other visible barriers is a great way to create a perceived separation between groups of objects — even if they have the same proximity, shape, color, etc.
7. FOCAL POINT
The focal point principle states that whatever stands out visually will capture and hold the viewer’s attention first.
SOME OF MY COMPOSITIONS
BY USING PAPER :
Some compositions i made in paper and some compositions by using figma , the compositions i made in paper was just like some childhood scribbles on the piece of paper didn’t make any sense to me , i was full confused and then after looking deeply , i gave some title to each of my paper compositions.
I have drawn 100 compositions on a white paper . just came in my mind i have scribbled on white paper, i was just scribbling with black sketch pen without any thought in my mind. Out of 100 i have selected 5–10 drawings. which are my favorite , with using black paper and some sand colors i have done compositions.
- Galaxy with different shapes : just using sand colors and black sheet , i have drawn explored one principle . by looking at this picture its look like galaxy, where all planets just revolve .
principles involved : focal point , similarity
2. Semi circles : by looking at this pattern , it reminds of group of semicircles
Principles involved : closure
3. buildings of town : by looking at this i remember my hometown , where all buildings are attached nearby
Principles involved: closure
4. DECORATIONS : By looking at this compositions , i remember some decorations at my school
Principles involved : Similarity
5. MARBLES: By looking at this composition, i remember the ground marbles of the floor
Principles involved : figure ground , similarity
By using Figma :
I am very new to figma , i just know little basics , but later i believe that i will know everything about figma by practicing a lot , here are my some compositions of figma .
- CONE : by seeing at this compositions , the first thing comes into my mind is ice cream cones
Principles involved: closure
2. Disney mickey mouse : by looking at this composition , i remember my mickey cartoon which is my favorite in childhood .
Principles involved : continuity , common region
3. BUILDING BLOCKS GAME : By looking at this composition , i remember building blocks game
Principles involved : closure
4. Stressing device : by looking at this composition, i remeber some tiny circles which are found in some stressing slippers or devices.
Principles involved: figure ground.
5. WOODEN PENCIL : By looking at this composition, i remember these stars on wooden pencil.
Principles involved : proximity , figure ground
CONCLUSION :
All these compositions that i have drawn in paper and some in figma made me understand that how we can find a meaning by simply observing it , can create some different meanings by just looking at the patterns , how our brain make sense of everything .
Thank you reading.
