“Coded Bias” is a film that reveals the hidden biases embedded in AI algorithms which affect our lives. It follows a researcher, Joy Buolamwini, who is discovering discriminatory flaws in facial recognition technology. This film draws attention to the effect of these distortions on society, calling for increased awareness and oversight in developing artificial intelligence systems.

From the documentary, I learned about the extent of bias when it comes to face recognition technology. The film shows how these biases have a proportionate impact on the marginalized and reinforce systemic discrimination. In order to identify the potential harm caused by these technologies, it is necessary to understand their inherent flaws and limitations. It underlines the importance of ensuring ethical supervision and accountability when developing AI, so as not to worsen social inequalities.

The lack of regulation and accountability in the area of artificial intelligence was the most interesting part of the documentary. The fact that such technologies have been developed and used by large technology companies in the absence of transparency or appropriate controls, creates an environment where potential harm and exploitation can occur. The film raises the question of who should regulate AI technology in order to guarantee fairness and prevent discrimination. It’s also starting to raise ethical concerns about using biased algorithms in critical areas such as law enforcement or health care. In addition, I am left wondering whether education should play a part in raising awareness about algorithmic bias and the need for diversity of representation when developing technology so as not to repeat these biases.
