“Taking initiative is a form of self-empowerment”

(Stephen R. Covey)

A big part of becoming independent for a women is having the freedom of mobility. Depending and waiting for people to drop you off and pick up can really get on ones nerves and that’s what happened to me.

I live alone in hostel away from home and whenever i have to go at some places like university, academy, friend’s house etc. I always have to wait for an Uber driver to drop me off and that take up a lot of my time and money too. As I live in hostel so I already have a budget and I have to run in accordance with that. I was facing these issues since I moved to Lahore because at home you have a family who can take care of you but away from home you are on your own. So one day I got this idea and planned to work on it, which was to “learn how to ride a motorbike”.

I even took the initiative and asked my brother to teach me and he agreed. I started going out with my brother, learning how to ride and was becoming pretty good at it but then he had to go to China so my training stopped in the middle.

After that I used to think that I would start practicing and learning again so that I can get better at it and finally buy a motorbike for myself that would give me the independence of mobility. However I just could not commit to this goal because of so many issues like not being sure about where to start, being hesitant to ask for help, afraid of the stigma and more. But recently I finally asked one of my friend to help and teach me and now it’s been the 5th day of my training and I am learning it real fast. It was not easy to start this process all over again in such a big city and all I needed was to take an initiative and I did.

Now I am planning to apply for my driver’s license and then I will buy my first motorbike very soon InshaAllah.
