Try, try, till you find what you want

From my childhood, I have been a cautious person. I would hold back myself with imagined inhibitions, what-ifs and self-doubt. However, this cautiousness did not stop me from pursuing what I wanted. I always made sure I achieved what I set out to.

With teenage came independence. The freedom of living on your own, exploring new things, creating new types of relationships — the exposure was immense and I realised how much I had lost by controlling myself. I became an ardent experimenter — I never lost an opportunity to try something new, be it food, adventure, hobbies, technology, everything.

This is how it works for most of us. The more we grow from childhood to early adulthood, the more we open our minds and gain exposure to new thoughts, ideas and interests. In fact, these new experiences are the forces that typically mould your long-term life and career aspirations.

As we get older, we tend to act like adults, refusing to go out of our comfort zones. But every time you do move out and push yourself, you will find that you learn immensely and evolve into a better person and a better professional. Every time you travel to a new country or city, you become more accepting of the differences among people. Every time you read a new book or article, you get new ideas.

Exposure builds perspective

Exposure builds perspective

Every time you move to a new industry or job profile, you are giving yourself that all-important space to learn and adapt for newer challenges. Being in the same job profile or organization for a long time severely limits your exposure and affects you negatively in the long term. If you decide to move, you will be unable to adapt to different requirements of the other jobs available outside

In my professional career, I do not hesitate to change industry, location, job profile, organization if I think it will be an interesting role to contribute and more importantly, learn. Over the last 5 years, I have explored multiple industries, job profiles and locations. Each of these roles have contributed immensely to developing a well-rounded thinking process which I would not have got had I refused to try. The wisdom of multiple perspectives is why you have to experiment and try out new things every single chance you get.

A pinch of salt

There are times when such experimentation can lead to disasters — for your intellectual growth or for your emotional well-being. Equally, there are successful trials that will give you immense satisfaction and confidence in yourself. All these disasters and successes will take you closer to realising what it is that you truly seek.

Before you go…

There is a saying — It is better to have tried and failed than never to have tried at all. You are always better off for the experience that you have gained by actually trying something out. So try, try and try again and stop not, until you find what you truly want in your life.
