Allemansrätten

Today we are going to talk about the so called “Allemansrätten” in Sweden. We will become familiar with the meaning of the word and what is allowed to do in Sweden.

I decided to make this lesson a bit different. There will be a text about the Allemansrätten in Swedish and the translation of it below.

Everyman's right

One is allowed to take a walk in the forest and countryside in Sweden. One can also pick berries and mushrooms (but be careful, there are toxic mushrooms) and flowers (if they are not protected).

One is allowed to camp one night on others’ lands without permission but not on someone’s piece of land, of course.

One may light a fire (if there is no fire risk).

One has to always be conscious about what one is doing: One cannot harm nature or frighten the animals etc. And of course, pick up after ourselves when we have camped.

This right, to go almost wherever we want in the wild, we call the Everyman’s right, and we are very proud of it! It is quite unique in the world.
