The national anthem

I have tried to explain how important to is study more than just the language itself in the previous lessons. I have decided to add this one to make it real. It is going to introduce us the Swedish national anthem and its roots.

Do you think that national anthems are important? Are you interested in the Swedish one? Would you like to know more about it? Yes? Ok then, let’s get down to business.

Firstly, several background information about the anthem. Its name is Du gamla, du fria which stands for Thou ancient, thou free and the original name is Sång till Norden which stands for Song to the North. And what was meant by Norden? Originally it was a common denomination for the Scandinavian countries (Norway, Sweden, Denmark). But nowadays the Norden in the anthem is a synonym of Sweden.

It started to be recognized as a national anthem during the 19th century. In 1938 a national radio ended its evening broadcasts with this song every day. The interesting thing is that it has never been legislated as a national anthem despite the official attempts during the 20th century. Nevertheless, Du gamla, du fria is played for example at governmental ceremonies as well as sport events and is an unofficial national anthem then.

Secondly, the original lyrics were created in 1844 by Richard Dybeck:

Du gamla, Du fria, Du fjällhöga nord
Thou old, thou free, thou mountainous north
Du tysta, Du glädjerika sköna!
Thou quiet, Thou joyful [and] fair!
Jag hälsar Dig, vänaste land uppå jord,
I greet thee, most beautiful land upon earth,
/: Din sol, Din himmel, Dina ängder gröna.:/
/:Thy sun, Thy sky, Thy meadows green.:/
Du tronar på minnen från fornstora dar,
Thou art enthroned upon memories of great olden days,
då ärat Ditt namn flög över jorden.
When honoured thy name flew across the earth,
Jag vet att Du är och Du blir vad Du var.
I know that thou art and will remain what thou wast,
/:Ja, jag vill leva, jag vill dö i Norden.:/
/:Yes, I want to live, I want to die in the North.:/
Jag städs vill Dig tjäna, mitt älskade land,
I forever want to serve thee, my beloved country,
Dig trohet till döden vill jag svära.
Loyalty until death I want to swear thee,
Din rätt skall jag värna med håg och med hand,
Thy right I will protect with mind and with hand,
/:Din fana, högt den bragderika bära.:/
/: thy banner, the heroes carry high.:/
Med Gud skall jag kämpa, för hem och för härd,
With God I shall fight for home and for hearth,
för Sverige, den kära fosterjorden.
for Sweden, the beloved native soil.
Jag byter Dig ej mot allt i en värld
I trade thee not, for anything in a world
/: Nej, jag vill leva, jag vill dö i Norden!.:/
/: No, I want to live, I want to die in the North.:/
