John, I recoil from the terms “lower-class” and low-class” which are used in your article. “Low-class” is pejorative. Your interviewee sounds so glib, characterizing the “egalitarian” model of marriage as stereotypically middle-class: “The second model is both spouses are in the workforce and both have a good income. And both help out with the kids, taking them to doctor’s appointments and dropping them off at soccer practice.” For heavens sake. Who are the parents “helping out?” The nanny? I question whether egalitarian marriage is the exclusive province of the middle and upper classes. As for “Mark Zuckerberg marries a doctor, for instance,” I believe they met when they were undergraduates.
