Awaken My Love

I guess I should start this off by letting you know that I don’t know Donald Glover because of Community. As you’re gasping and getting ready to call me un-American it’s because I know Donald Glover from one of his earlier mixtapes, Culdesac. It was then in 2010, that I was exposed to the
Basquiat-esque artistry that he posses.

I’ve never seen Community and it won’t phase me no matter how much of a travesty you think that is. If we’re talking about Atlanta, that’s my jim jam — but this is about Childish Gambino.

With Awaken My Love, he was able to polarize an otherwise super loyal cult fanbase. With one group detesting the album, screaming, “when you start rapping again, let me know” and, “Gambino is trash”. The other group enamored by it singing high praises like, “Awaken My Love is art. Sonically insane.” and, “this is too much, I can’t handle this much at once”.

Complex music hates it, calling it a “community theater production of a funk album”— but who cares what they think.

Chuck English tweeted :

This album has altered my perception on how we should experience an album & How I want to make music.

Questlove called it a “sucker punch” in the most endearing way -

I thought I was getting some fresh millennial 2016 hip hop shit and I got sucker punched. The music is so lush man, I can see the kaleidoscope color mesh of the #Westbound logo. Dude I can’t curb my enthusiasm.

If you were expecting a hip hop album from Childish Gambino, you were gravely disappointed.

If you were expecting a Childish Gambino album then you were gifted an early Christmas.

A track by track review deserves more than a week's worth of time but for now, Redbone is understandably a crowd favorite. It has all the makings of a fantastic voyage off the rip with that timelessly funky Bootsy Collins sample.

For me though, the track that’s been getting the most repeats is, Zombies. When I close my eyes and listen to this song I can see it play out so vividly it’s like watching a real life horror film and I love it.

Throughout this project you can hear 3 stacks, Prince, Jimi, even Cudi influences. It’s such a blend of r&b and funk with some punk influences. Awaken My Love is a complete album front to back which is what music seems to be lacking lately. Track for track this is a well put together piece of art. If you don’t have this in your library… congratulations,

you played yourself.
