Are You Living?

I look around at society and people are unhappy. They hate their jobs; they hate their significant other; they hate life. Why? Why are people so unhappy? Why do I talk to my friends after a day of work and it sounds like someone punched them in the gut? Why are we okay with this?

I’ve been thinking a lot about life lately. A lot of what has been told to me doesn’t make sense. I was told to go to high school, then college, then after college get a job right away. Once you get the job, then you can start buying things: a car, house, etc. If you don’t like school, well you’d better not drop out, college dropouts are failures. If you don’t like your job, well just stick it out, your first job always stinks. Keep on keepin’ on until you’ve moved up the ladder.

This is bullshit.

As far as we know we are on this planet one time. Why, tell me why people don’t chase after their craziest, wildest dreams? Why else are we here other than to live life? I can assure you that we are not here to spend 30% of our lives doing work that we do not love ourselves.

How can we give up on ourselves so quickly? Look at the human body — it is miraculous, perfect in every way. But we take it for granted by drifting by each day, doing the same mundane tasks. Our days should not be filled with spreadsheets and useless content. No, our days should be filled with finding ourselves; understanding who we truly are. Growing and evolving each day. The answers to life are all around us, but nobody has time to see them.

“Stop and smell the roses.”

A simple quote. I used to think this meant, “when you get a chance in your busy schedule, enjoy some life.” It never occurred to me that this quote literally means, “stop! enjoy life all of the time.” We should be enjoying every second that we have on this planet. Every second that we inhabit our perfectly constructed bodies, we should be spending time trying to find our purpose, because we all have a purpose.

Here we are, on this perfect planet, in our perfect bodies, and you think it’s okay to be sitting in front of a computer for 10 hours a day working for somebody else’s dream. That doesn’t seem flawed to you? That train of thought has been ingrained into our code. That train of thought is what society relies on to keep a well oiled machine. It needs pawns, cogs in the machine to do their work. Society rewards you with titles that mean nothing. They drag you along until you are no longer useful. If you were good they’ll give you a nice retirement package. If you disobeyed societal norms and chose thinking, learning, growing, and evolving — society labels you an outcast.

You can do whatever you want. Society and the company you keep are the things that keep you from growing. Your mind is polluted with negative. If there are people in your life that don’t align with your goals then you have to leave them behind. The people who are meant to be in your life will be there.

I want you to think about your life tonight and I want you to ask yourself if you deserve better. That’s all — do you deserve better?
