We are pleased to announce this year’s 6 workshops, but, before that, let’s get serious for a second.

From our experience, as the end of the hackathon approaches, hackathon participants tend to give up their spots in workshops. That withdrawal is far from ideal, as workshops have a limited number of participants and speakers are preparing them with a certain number of participants in mind.

For that reason, we are introducing a new rule:

  • Hackathon participants can only attend a maximum of 2 (two, T-W-O) workshops.

We hope this rule increases the quality of the workshops and the event in…

We have cooked up an event to give you a taste of what Make or Break will feel like: welcome to the MoB Sessions.

The first MoB Session will take place on March 15th at Blip

These sessions will take place throughout the year in different venues, with different speakers and different subjects, but they all mean to keep the Make or Break spirit alive and kicking during the months prior to the event itself.

The first MoB Session will take place on March 15th, after-work, at Blip (thanks for having us!), and we have two awesome speakers eager to share their knowledge on topics that are probably bigger than life itself.

As you probably already know by now, Make or Break will happen in April, between the 13th and the 15th. It will take place in Porto, namely, at Palácio dos Correios.

The view from our window. Other events make participants check the time on their phones. Make or Break has an entire city hall just for that purpose.

What you probably don’t know or remember is the plethora of activities we have planned for this year. Please, start taking notes:

Hackathon

This is where it all began. We’ll have a 48-hour hackathon (this is the “Make” part), followed by a hack fair: one afternoon of going around experimenting what others did and then voting on their projects (the “Break” part).

There are three different categories to evaluate…

We are thrilled to present the first Make or Break AI Competition, starting March 2018!

It’s pretty straightforward: you have to create a simple AI agent capable of playing (and winning) a simple board game created just for the competition.

We’ll be providing a simple submission form where you’ll be able to post your agent’s code to play games against other agents.

It’s not table tennis, but it could be… right? (TOPIO at Tokyo International Robot Exhibition, photo by Humanrobo)

This competition will work as a separate and smaller challenge, apart from our main hackathon.

You can participate exclusively online without attending the event, but if you want a chance to win some prizes, you’ll have to show…

Make or Break 2018 is just around the corner (less than 3 months away!) and we want to give you a quick update on how we’ll handle applications, starting this edition.

We’ll start reviewing applications before admitting participants, in order to:

  • Reduce the no-show rate on the hackathon and workshops;
  • Increase the general quality of projects.

We will also feature 2 application periods:

  • Until March 15th — by then we will start reviewing the first batch of applications and give feedback to all teams or applicants. …

Make or Break 2017, the 4th edition of Porto Summer of Code

On September 8th, we opened the doors to Make or Break 2017, the 4th edition of the event previously known as Porto Summer of Code.

Make or Break 2017

Make or Break 2017 was a 3 day tech party.

The main event was a hackathon that culminated in a hackfair.

It also featured 6 workshops, board games, and video games.

In this year’s competition, the format changed from a jury selection to a popular vote.

In Make or Break 2017 winners were decided by popular vote.

We’re all used to the First Past the Post (FPTP) voting method or some variation of it, where every voter gets one ballot where they choose one option. All votes are tallied and the candidate with the most votes wins. This intuitively seems like a good system, but it has a lot of proven and demonstrable problems. CGP Grey has an excellent video on this topic.

The problem we’re solving

If all the voters vote their true judgement, the most likely outcome is for a minority to rule. If…

We love board games. 🎲
Boardgamers Porto love them even more and can teach us a thing or two!

On September 9th, starting at 7pm, Boardgamers Porto will host a board games night at Make or Break!
They have prepared an amazing night, with all kinds of games.

“Fun” is the name of the game here. You should still play carefully if you want a chance to win!

Games to be played: Codenames (15 min), The Resistance (20 min)

Hello Make or Break!

It’s with enormous pleasure that we at Doist take part in Porto Summer of Code — now Make or Break — for the 4th consecutive year! We’ve been following the event closely since its genesis, and we’re proud of what it is becoming year after year.

The idea of giving back to the community where Doist’s only office is located — in Porto — is something that we’ve always been passionate about and it’s something we want to continue to foster.

Nowadays, Doist is a thought…
