Why do people snore?
Snoring occurs when people find it difficult to breathe while sleeping. Snoring sounds are caused because of the blockage of air in the respiratory tract. Snoring can even cause heart attacks and destroy your partner’s sleep and peace.
Snoring is caused when the flow of air from the nose to the respiratory tract gets blocked.
As we breathe while sleeping, air passes through the windpipe to the lungs. The rear portion of mouth where the tongue and throat meet holds the velum (soft tissue at the back of mouth) and uvula (fleshy part at the back of velum). These are delicate enough to collapse.
If these break down, the air passage is blocked. The blocked airway causes the velum and uvula to vibrate producing the snoring sounds. A high level of blockage results in even more vibration thereby increasing the decibel levels.
Here are a few factors that can cause snoring:
i) Alcohol relaxes the throat muscles and block the passage of air, making us snore.
ii) Cold and nasal congestion.
iii) Sleep apnea (pauses in breathing during sleep).
iv) Obesity thickens the muscles at the back of mouth thereby narrowing the airways.

Normally It takes about 10–20 minutes to dive into sound slumber. If it takes more or less, it indicates something. Let’s explore the possibilities.
Those who take an hour or more to doze off may be struggling with insomnia. Excessive sleeping during day, caffeine intake, a wandering mind can cause insomnia. Observe proper sleep hygiene and consult a doctor if the situation worsens.
If you nod off too early it’s because you don’t sleep for sufficient hours. A human body needs 7–8 hours of sleep to remain fit. Don’t cut off your sleeping hours.
