This is part of a series comparing Jiu Jitsu with InfoSec.

A wise BJJ instructor will tell you to learn one new thing each time you’re on the mat, whether you’ve been rolling for a day or for 10+ years. Learn one new thing. It might be how a training partner performs an escape, or how you can link two moves together in a new way, or maybe conceptualizing your body in space in such a way that you can apply the same technique to a different situation.

In InfoSec, there’s always one new thing to learn. One new attack technique that just came out. One new defensive approach you never heard of. One new tool that just got released. One new unique thing in your organization that presents a new security problem. There’s always one new thing — probably more like 10 new things — to learn each day, even if you’ve been doing this work for 15+ years. In fact, if you’ve been working in InfoSec for that long, chances are you’re addicted to learning one new thing each day.

Focusing on one new thing ensures you don’t get overloaded and you make progress.
