You could not be more right — bravo!
This reducto ad absurdum approach to news coverage that is plaguing the media not only in the States but increasingly everywhere in the World is one frightening indicator of the abandonment of real thinking, and it terrifies me.
I am living in The Philippines, and I am British, so some people might wonder why I have been watching the Candidates’ Debates on both sides of the mainstream political landscape in the US in the run up to your General Election in November, but for me it is integral to our World. That is not a big ass-kiss to America, but if Americans enjoy the ego boost then that’s fine by me. America is so influential on the International stage that who ends up being President, and which party controls the House and Senate has a direct impact on the rest of the World in many many ways.
I am completely shouting and cheering for Bernie, but I am reading multiple outlets for coverage and analysis about Trump, Cruz, Rubio and Clinton as well, and as you say it is the only route to understanding the complete equation of I support this and I reject that. In fact the reason why so many people are still supporting Trump would seem to be, from where I am standing, that they are not interested in listening to anything anyone else has to say and weighing the merits. Donald’s their guy, and that’s all they need to know. This kind of wilful ignorance is the poison that’s killing our planet with Climate Change and our societies with hate and fear.
Still, I really love the internet and the emerging democratisation of information that it continues to make possible; I read and hear more and more voices calling for this kind of engagement and consideration that you are championing with your post.
Maybe the Interregnum we seem to be experiencing can also be the turning point for a new Renaissance, for a wave of reason, discussion and engagement to carry us all to a brighter future. We can hope, right?
