Out of Pocket: What Teachers Across the Country Spend on Supplies
Joanna Petrone

I’ve been waiting for the Billfold to cover this! I started tracking what I was spending and then it got too out of control. Last year alone I spent over $70 on pencils.

I moved into a new classroom this year and was pleasantly surprised to learn that I get an extra $200 as a new teacher — everyone else gets $100 to Walmart or Staples. I try to only buy consumables with school money — technically they get to keep whatever I buy with their money…so my printer and lamps would have to stay if I didn’t pay for them out-of-pocket.
