It has been pointed out to me that there is an alternative explanation for this — that something did happen, but Smith simply misunderstood it. That is, his binding to a stone and the ‘threat’ of sacrifice was a Powhatan initiation ceremony. It remains intriguing, though, that Smith chose not to mention this event until after Matoaka’s visit to the English royal court and her subsequent death.
