In other words, the barrier to the poor becoming healthier and wealthier is in the hands of the not poor, who are loathe to hand over their “hard earned” cash to lower crime rates, save money in healthcare and generally improve society. Many people still believe that being poor is a moral failure or a genetic inheritance, failing to recognize their own good luck at being born into better circumstances or being in the right place at the right time. Many a politician has capitalized on those beliefs (e.g., the “self made” man who started out with a million dollar loan…) and exploited scarcity thoughts and fears, to the detriment of greater society.
