Why has tech changed our lives forever ?

Imagine yourself sitting in a room, alone, with a table up front.

You would see a smartphone and a book placed on the table. What would you choose first ?

Hmmm…Well, the readers out there would of course prefer the book right ? But what next ? What do you do when you’ve read the book ? Stare at the ceiling ? For how long ?

Now you could of course ask me,

Manab, why would we be in such a situation ?

And here’s what I’d say.

The fact that all of you imagined yourselves in the situation I created above tells a lot.

Sometimes, we’re forced to think inside the box. We have led our brain to believe that we always need to be involved in an activity; staying still would get us bored. And this is the exact scenario where tech comes in. The potential of technology is ever expanding, there’s no limit to which it can be utilized - Research, Militia, Education, Business’, Automobile, Shopping; the list can go on forever. Smartphones and computers are mere gateways that give us access to this vast ocean.

A lot of you might ask, Manab, how is any of this related to the situation you created above ?

Well, here’s how. Some of you would have chosen the smartphone in the above scenario and felt like you saved yourselves the boredom- which might seem like a good alternative to the book, until what you’re gonna read next. An alternative solution to the above scenario would be walking out of the room and taking a walk in the neighborhood.

Technology, with it’s vast benefits and choices, has spoilt us for choice. Suggested videos, targeted advertisements, etc. are designed based on our decisions in the past and present, which basically limit our thought process and do not allow us to explore our fullest potential. Do not get me wrong, technology is way more than a boon to humankind, better portrayed as a life saver in certain scenarios, the pandemic has just proved how tech can be a MAJOR part of our lives; but in one way or the other, it has it’s effects on the human mind. The fact that most of us chose between the two alternatives proves this statement.

Is it bad ? Yes and no. Can we change it ? Yes and NO. Should we try changing it for ourselves ? Maybe.

There is no escaping the fact that we humans love innovation; new inventions excite us. Technology was, is and will continue to evolve. All we need to do, is ensure that we’ve drawn a line - a line that tell us when to depend on tech and when not to.

Happy reading and exploring, Stay safe, Take care.
