The Cosmos Is Creating God

Or Why I Might Be A Pantheist

Once everything was the Same, then Difference came about. Because there were now distinct points in what was once sameness— Spacetime came into being as well as Movement.

Because things were moving in spacetime, the One and the Many encountered, disassembled and reformed one another. These encounters between distinct things made relationships and processes.

This is the overly simplified story of the beginning of creation (if there ever was a “beginning”).

The movement of creation does not stop. Whenever distinct things are able to balance, sustain and bind their interactions with each other — the whole thing either collapses in on itself or transcends itself by creating a new environment.

This new environment is dependent on and created by the ‘base interactions/relationships’ but it can also affect the base interactions. Reality is a two-way street.

This continued until the embodied conscious beings evolved on this planet. First it was sentience which simply reacted to outward influences without conceptualizing distinctions. Later on, species started to find their own evolutionary niches creating interrelated diverse ecosystems.

One particular species started using their bodies and vocal chords with such complexity that it created a new environment, which referred back to the physical world but also reinvented it: the domain of language (as conceived by humankind).

So… assuming that this process of evolution which took place on our teeny tiny bit of the universe can be applied to all of creation outside our solar system — would it make sense for a being akin to god to exist somewhere?

By god I mean a conscious being that is all-present, all-knowing and all-powerful.

Omnipresence

What is presence? What does it mean to be? To be is to do. To (inter)act is to exist. Presence has to do with how your actions have a profound affect in your relationships. It is something intangibly subtle— made manifest by small unnoticed things.

So in order for a being to be omnipresent, it must act in all things. Not only must it act in all things, but it must be conscious of such things. It is not just a force or a physical law, if it is to fit the basic criteria of a god, then it must have a mind (will/intention).

How does one come to know oneself? One comes to know oneself through encountering something other than itself. But the act of perception itself is not knowledge. Some measure of resistance to one’s will creates the initial conditions for knowledge.

And how does one come to know something other than itself? We perceive, observe and then theorize based on its actions.

One can never completely know oneself or another, for being is doing (continuous action), acting means interacting, interaction creates change.

Since Self and Other cannot be reconciled without erasure of their differences, these differences must be mediated by creating a new environment.

For humans, our sense of self evolved alongside our ability to reason and communicate with one another. Sociality, rationality and language are inextricably linked.

To know is to communicate. This isn’t necessarily confined to human language.

So is it even possible for a being to know everything? Maybe only in the sense of recreating it to suit your purposes and actions. The only way to really know something is to “remake it in your image”, so to speak.

We primarily do this through the domain of language. As well as our creative participation with the world around us (e.g., painting, sculpting, landscaping etc.).

To borrow some of my conclusions from a previous story: Strength or power is to have a mind that does not waver, but to continue to move and change.

An all-powerful being would have consistent focus on a goal while also continuously changing in order to accomplish that goal.

A God Yet To Be

It could be possible that a cosmic entity with all the attributes I laid out already exists — maybe we just can’t fathom or observe it due to its scale.

It could be that we are enveloped in the cosmic entity itself. Like a cell in a human body.

But supposing my metaphysics to be correct, it is likely that this cosmic entity akin to god has no sense of Self yet. Not only will it need perceptive faculties, but also an Other to compare itself to. Some entity just as complex as itself in order for it to even recognize itself.

Maybe all the right conditions are set for it to be born. But it lays dormant — a sleeping god.
