Introduction

Recently, I had the privilege of visiting and experiencing the grandeur of India’s newest convention centre, the International Exhibition-cum-Convention Centre (IECC). On July 29, 2023, the centre opened its doors to students from various academic institutions, providing them with a unique opportunity to interact with Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the Akhil Bhartiya Shiksha Samagam 2023, coinciding with the third anniversary of the National Education Policy 2020.

Architecture & Design

As I explored the centre, I was captivated by its impeccable architectural design, which truly is a sight to behold. Spanning 123 acres, the IECC aims to become the MICE (Meetings Incentives Conferences Exhibitions) hub of the nation. The project was a collaboration between renowned international firm Aedas, known for their work on the Marina Bay Sands in Singapore, and Indian firm Arcop, which played a significant role in the design of the IGI Airport Terminal 3. It features a prominent conch shell architecture, symbolizing auspicious beginnings, representing the positive impact that this centre is set to have on India’s growth.

The Heart — Plenary Hall

Undoubtedly, the talk of the town since its inauguration has been the Plenary Hall, a true masterpiece within the IECC. Boasting a seating capacity of up to 7,000 delegates, the Plenary Hall surpasses even the iconic Sydney Opera House, which can accommodate around 5,900 individuals. This remarkable hall is fitted with cutting-edge technology and an impressive set-up that has the potential to redefine global conference standards. The hall is equipped with state-of-the-art audio and video systems for simultaneous interpretation capabilities in over 20 languages, enabling real-time multilingual communication.

The roof of the hall features a unique design resembling the petals of a flower on the outside, while the interior resembles the bowl-like structure of a lotus, paying homage to India’s national flower.

Impact on International Political Landscape

India’s role and position in global politics cannot be underestimated. Our significance lies not only in our population but also in our international relations. Situated as a pivot point between the Middle East, China, and Southeast Asia, India plays a crucial role on the world’s political stage. With the new convention centre, India possesses a valuable asset to enhance diplomatic relations. Over the years, India has successfully hosted numerous international events and conferences, including the Global Partnership Summit, World Sustainable Development Summit, and Indian Economic Summit. The upcoming G20 Summit in 2023 provides yet another opportunity for India to demonstrate its status as a top global player. Hosting this prestigious event will further enhance India’s reputation, showcasing its world-class facilities and fostering international cooperation and collaboration.

All entrance doors have a unique peacock feather motif further accentuating the Indian essence of the centre.

Conclusion

As we conclude our virtual visit to India’s newest convention centre, we cannot overlook its significance in the nation’s international diplomacy. The Plenary Hall, with its modern technology and state-of-the-art facilities, is poised to leave a lasting positive impression on international delegates attending the upcoming G20 Summit in September 2023. We eagerly await the unfolding of this momentous event and the impact it will have on India’s global standing.
