Chelsea have agreed to pay £26.3m plus add-ons for the services of 19-year-old Malo Gusto. Gusto becomes the latest signing after Joao Felix, Mykhailo Mudryk, Benoit Badiashile, David Datro Fofana, Noni Madueke, and Andrey Santos. He signed seven and a half-year deal at Stamford Bridge, but he will spend the remainder of the 2022–23 season on loan at Lyon.

The 19-year-old will provide backup and longterm competition to Reece James, who missed the majority of this season through injury.

We will dive into who Malo Gusto is.

Malo started his early career playing for ASVF before he joined Olympique Lyonnais as an Under-14. Malo signed his first professional contract with the French club in December 2021. He made his professional debut in January 2021, replacing Bruno Guimaraes.

Style of play

Gusto is usually deployed as a right-back. He is a team player, possessing the ability to hold up the play. In building up an attack from behind, he is able to stretch up the play and is available for deep switches and quick one-two passes. He is able to rotate in a system in wide triangles when the team is attacking in the final third.

His threats are from the deep when he overlaps with the ball, but he can be caught a little too deep.
