His main responsibility is to mark players, who are positioned in their assigned place during the game. This is to make sure that the team doesn’t concede between their midfield and defensive lines. He maintains a compact shape when pressing, and squeezes the opponent to make mistakes once he loses possession.

One weakness in his game is his big and burly frame effects his agility and acceleration. He has a hard time defending in 1vs 1 situations. He often struggles in dealing with tricky and skilled opponents. They take on him at ease, when he doesn’t have control of the situation.

Even though it doesn’t happen often, it happens against top-level opponents like Erling Haaland, Kylian Mbappe, Kingsley Coman and players of that type. He has not mastered the ability to anticipate the situation early. If he works on his weaknesses he can be one of the best center-backs in this business.

Manchester United are thought to be interested in taking Akanji to Old Trafford.

Looking at his defensive stats, Akanji ranks ahead of all Man utd players. With a new manager coming in, either Pochettino or Erik Ten Hag, they will bring defensive reinforcements for sure.
