I have been saying this for years (although not nearly as eloquently as you). The charter school in my neighborhood is closer than the public middle school my son attends but I would never even think of sending him there. Ironically, charter schools are called “community schools” in Ohio yet they are far from it. The kids my son goes to school with live in our neighborhood. They hang out together after school. I know their parents. And as the wife of a high school teacher in the same city we live in, I cannot tell you how many countless times kids have come back and told my husband that going to school in such a diverse school system has prepared them for the real world. Of course I want the same for my son. I often hear parents say things like, “If this one thing happens I will pull my kids out of that school so fast.” That is very disappointing to me. That only teaches kids that if the slightest problem arises they can just leave. I prefer to have my son learn to stay and fight for what is right.
