Using git aliases has increased specificity, so by convention it should be preferred. Global definitions, such as a global shell alias, are usually a bad practice and should be avoided, unless unavoidable or an exceptional case.
That having been said, it’s one more configuration file to back up if you do it separately, but nothing that your backup script can’t handle among the dozens it probably already backs up.
