On January 30, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) for the current outbreak of coronavirus disease, known as COVID-19. On March 4, 2020, 33 countries announced school closings resulting in 300 million children missing class. With 1 billion children now missing school, officials have announced that school closures may last for a long time, possibly until September. It’s important to develop a plan to ensure children continue to learn and parents find a way to continue to work remotely until the outbreak has been contained.

I was a teacher for 15 years and an education entrepreneur for five. Through a series of interesting and surprising events, six years ago I stumbled upon an emerging type of homeschooling, primarily led by teacher-parents, techies, entrepreneurs, doctors, nurses, artists, writers who chose to homeschool because they were intrigued by the possibility of designing their child’s education, playing a greater role in their child’s learning and exploring new modalities of education outside of traditional school.

It is deeply important that parents can continue to do their work while their children play and learn independently.
